What is the new standard for building websites and online stores widely known as Responsive Web Design? Saying in nutshell it’s web development "under" the latest technology in computing and telecommunications, such as mobile devices. This trend has grown up in recent years as a result of changes in our thinking about the network. Mainly it’s related with the fact that for a long time use of the Internet has ceased to be the domain of the desktop.

There was a time in the evolve of computers that the screen size was gradually increased. Therefore there was also greater flexibility in the resolution, the width and other visual features of the designed websites. Pages built for large monitors - not foreseen even then, that soon will return smaller resolution of 800 × 600, 640 × 480 and 320 × 240. This was due to the fashion for cell phones with access to the network and all the netbooks and tablets. Policy of creating pages had to be slightly changed.

For the first time Responsive Web Design appeared in 2010 in an article by Ethan Marcotte. He proposed a new set of principles and concepts under which the page should be optimised to use and access regardless of the size of the device on which they are displayed. It included availability to run on the website up and down navigation adapted to the screen size, legible and having the ability to scroll in one axis. The new standard also take into account the requirement that the use of optimised webpages, regardless of the size of the display, was comfortable and intuitive for the user.

An important change in the design of such sites was shifting from long tradition mouse using to new technologies such as touch screens and pads (pointing devices available for example on the PS4). Currently, it is assumed that the site will be also displayed on these devices what have only touch screens. It forces for example using large, clear navigation buttons. In turn, the small size of the screen determine the amount of information displayed at once. On the mobile page everything can not be loaded at one therefore it has to start from a hierarchy of data. In addition, mobile pages should display only the necessary, non-dispersible components which simply allow users to perform an action.

Responsive Web Design equals simplicity - pages functional perfectly, without Flash or other trashes that could hinder navigation. This trend is from the point of view of a programmer both a challenge and a simplification of the work over the site. For site owners it is something difficult to escape and even more difficult to escape in the future. The best way is to design websites according to these guidelines.
